It is news you never want to hear, however if you or a loved one receives a cancer diagnosis, it is good to know that support and advanced cancer treatment is available nearby.

Genevieve County Memorial Hospital (SGCMH), we are committed to providing patients with the best cancer care and support possible, by offering the very latest in cancer treatment options and the most advanced cancer-fighting technology.
Honoring the physician who has consistently shown his dedication in delivering excellence in cancer care to the community of Ste. Genevieve since 1992, the Alan P. Lyss Center for Cancer Care and Clinical Research was officially named and dedicated in November 2007.
Dr. Matthew Stein now oversees cancer care in Ste. Genevieve, continuing to offer the same optimal, state of the art cancer care to our community and surrounding areas. Our oncologist/hematologist cares for cancer patients in Ste. Genevieve as part of a community outreach program through Missouri Baptist Cancer Center (MBCC). Missouri Baptist is part of Heartland Cancer Research, one of 34 community networks that comprise the National Center Institute Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP). This means, because of Dr. Stein's affiliation with MBCC he can offer his Ste. Genevieve patients the same vast and critical benefits of the very latest cancer research trials and treatments.
The highly trained nursing staff in the Alan P. Lyss Center for Cancer Care is dedicated to supporting patients and their family through their cancer journey and beyond with compassion and valuable nursing skill and experience.
The nursing team was awarded the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Team Achievement Award. The ONS Pearl Moore "Making a Difference" Team Award recognizes small teams for outstanding contributions within their workplace in improving patient care, and/or making a difference.
Your comfort and privacy is of significant importance to us. Each calming patient suite in the oncology/outpatient department is private, with a relaxing environment. We realize how vital support is from friends and family. We encourage you to bring your support person/people along, and they can remain with you in your room during treatment.

SGCMH Research Programs/Clinical Trials
Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital, Missouri Baptist Medical Center and the National Cancer Institute Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP) are working together to make top quality cancer care available to patients who live in rural communities. Together we bring access to the newest innovations in cancer treatment and prevention and top researchers together to serve the community.
Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital has been a member of the program for many years and has been deemed “the smallest cancer research facility in the country.”
Why is community-based cancer research important?
The ability to participate in research studies in a person's own community allows them to stay close to home, family, friends, support systems, and their local physician and health organizations, where high quality clinical studies are resulting in better care and better outcomes.
Clinical research made available in the community setting allows access to a larger and more diverse pateint population in a variety of "real world" healthcare locations where 80% of cancer patients receive their care. This can accelerate accrual to national clinical trials, enable feasibility testing of promising new interventions, and increase the generalizability of study findings. Engaging community oncologists in collaborative research can also facilitate the uptake of effective, evidence-based practices into routine, standard care.
Clinical trials are research studies that involve people. They test new ways to prevent, detect, diagnose, or treat diseases. People who participate in cancer clinical trials have an opportunity to contribute to scientists' knowlege about cancer and contribute in the development of improved cancer treatments. They also recieve state-of-the-art care from cancer experts across the nation.
By participating in clinical research studies through Missouri Baptist Cancer Center patients are among the first to benefit from new advances. In addition, participants in cancer clinical trials contribute to knowledge of, and progress against, cancer.
