Spotlight: A Garden Renewed Through Generosity

Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital (SGCMH) is celebrating the return of a cherished space thanks to a transformative gift from the SGCMH Friends Foundation. The Oncology Healing Garden has been reborn as a vibrant healing courtyard now open to patients, families, and staff.
For years, the garden served as a quiet refuge—until time and limited resources left it needing some attention. Recognizing the importance of restorative outdoor spaces in the healing process, the Friends Foundation and Oncology staff stepped forward with the funds and time that made a full renovation possible while preserving some plants, donated items, and memorabilia.
The Healing Garden was thoughtfully redesigned to provide an accessible outdoor space where patients can step out of their treatment rooms to experience fresh air, sunshine, and the calming views of nature while receiving care. The garden now features accessible walking paths, native plants chosen for year-round color, and a plan for comfortable shaded seating.
Katie Hogenmiller, RN, Director of Outpatient Services, shared how meaningful the project has been for the hospital community. “Nature has a way of lifting spirits,” she said. “For many of our patients, treatment days can be long and physically and emotionally demanding. This garden will offer a peaceful environment that promotes comfort, reflection, and healing.”
The garden has already become a favorite stop for families seeking a breath of fresh air between appointments, inpatients wanting to get outside for therapy, and for patients taking their first steps toward recovery.
In addition to being physically accessible for patients, the garden will be viewable from oncology treatment rooms. Even patients who are unable to go outside will still benefit from the restorative effects of nature, which studies show can help reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance overall well-being.
Mary Bleckler, Director of the Friends Foundation, said the project reflects the foundation’s commitment to community wellness. “We’re proud to help restore a space that brings comfort and hope,” she noted. “Healing happens in many forms, and this garden supports all of them.”
